Hannes Gerhardt, Ph.D.

I am a human geographer, specializing in political and economic geography, but generally I am a holistic thinker interested in how all of the social and natural forces come together to shape particular realities (in place!).  I received my bachelor’s in philosophy from the University of Miami, my master’s in geography from the University of Oslo, Norway, and my PhD in geography from the University of Arizona.

One theme that manifests itself in much of my past work is that of the "geographical imaginary", that is, how places are imagined to be and the consequences of these imaginings on decision making. I have, for instance, worked on a collaborative research project funded by the NSF that looked at the contested imaginaries of the Arctic, especially as this place opens up due to global warming. I am also very interested in economic geography, especially the impact that the digital age and cyberspace are having on work and conceptions of property. Related to this I like to consider future geographies, and how our organization of  the human world may evolve.
