David Newton, Ph.D.

Dr. David Newton is a UWG professor and a member of the teaching and research faculty in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in University College. He also serves a faculty appointment in the Office of the Provost where he works with faculty and academic programs on curriculum design and implementation, serves as UWG curriculum liaison to the University System of Georgia, and coordinates USG Momentum (Complete College Georgia) projects at UWG. He also is a member of the campus steering committee for UWG's SACSCOC Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) that supports student success through experiential learning. Dr. Newton received degrees from the College of Charleston (B.A., English), the Candler School of Theology (M.Div., Historical Theology), and Emory University (Ph.D., Linguistics). At the undergraduate and graduate levels, he has taught courses in linguistics, research & methods, theology, and literary studies. At UWG, he has served in leadership roles as a program director, department chair, dean, and associate vice-president for academic affairs. His scholarship has focused on linguistics—with an emphasis on language variation in the United States—and on the language and culture of the American South. In addition to conference presentations and journal articles, he has published books, critical editions, and chapters with the University of Georgia Press, the University of South Carolina Press, and the University of Arkansas Press. His current research focuses on the development of experiential learning opportunities for college students.
