UWG Names Alumna, Longtime Staff Member Chief of Staff, Assistant Vice PresidentShare this page
University of West Georgia President Dr. Brendan Kelly has appointed a two-time alumna and longtime staff member as his chief of staff and assistant vice president for administration, effective Feb. 1.
In this executive leadership role, Sarah Powell ’13 ’17 will continue her dedicated efforts to advocate for the university and its community at the local, state and federal levels. Additionally, as chief of staff, she will champion the interests of UWG students, faculty and staff and support Kelly’s initiatives to ensure the institution’s operations maintain a high level of efficacy and excellence.
“During her nearly 15 years of being connected to our university, Sarah has built a constellation of positive relationships on behalf of our institution, and I am thrilled to have her advance her impact in this role,” Kelly said. “Having graduated from UWG and served the university in a variety of capacities over the past decade — including time as a key member of the team in the Office of the President — her profound understanding of our university and the broader landscape in which we sit make Sarah exceptionally well-suited for this role.”
Powell earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications and her master’s degree in professional counseling, both from UWG. Prior to being named chief of staff and assistant vice president for administration, she served as UWG’s director of government and external relations, during which time she gained experience in advocating for UWG students to law- and policymakers near and far.
“I am deeply honored to serve in this role for the University of West Georgia,” Powell said of her appointment. “This institution has been a significant source of inspiration and positivity throughout my academic, professional and personal journeys, and as both an alumna and member of the community, I am excited to contribute to the continued elevation of UWG as a first-choice institution.”
