From Medic to Mentor: UWG Awards Degree of Achievement to Vietnam War VeteranShare this page
At the University of West Georgia, some achievements go beyond degrees. Mack Barnes, a beacon of hard work and dedication, was recently honored with a special degree of achievement in the Bachelor of Business Administration program, acknowledging his profound impact despite not having graduated.
After graduating from high school, Mack was drafted during the Vietnam War to serve as a medic, a role that would shape his future outlook on life. Upon returning home, he enrolled at UWG, where he would meet the love of his life, Mary Ann Hamil Barnes ’68 ’72. Balancing full-time work with full-time studies, Mack pursued a degree in business administration.
“Mack has always been a pillar of strength for our family,” explained his niece, UWG alumna Lisa Camp ’76 ’83. “His commitment to excellence and his tireless efforts have not only shaped his professional success but have also been a guiding light for all of us.”
Mack’s dedication to his studies was only matched by his work ethic in the business world. He approached every opportunity with vigor, giving his all to each endeavor. This commitment extended beyond his professional life, as he instilled these values in his children, grandchildren and anyone fortunate enough to know him.
Family always came first for Mack, and he was known to provide employment to family members in need.
Despite not walking across the stage at graduation, Mack’s impact on UWG and its community is profound. His story is a testament to the power of resilience and determination, serving as an inspiration to all who hear it.
“Uncle Mack taught us the value of hard work and perseverance, values that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives,” said his nephew, Mark Camp. “He has always been a source of wisdom and strength, and he leaves a lasting impression on everyone around him.”
Recently, Dr. Jon Preston, UWG’s provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, surprised Mack with a degree of achievement in the Bachelor of Business Administration program at his home in Florida, highlighting the lasting legacy he has created through his hard work and dedication.
“Mack Barnes epitomizes the spirit of resilience and dedication that we cherish at UWG,” Preston said. “It was an honor to present Mack with a degree of achievement, recognizing his profound influence and commitment to excellence. His dedication to learning and to his family and community is an inspiration to us all.”
