Through her generous support, is making a lasting impact on the University of West Georgia by contributing to the success of students in the Tanner Health School of Nursing. Her scholarship, the Gwyn Brown Chesnut Nursing Endowed Scholarship – inspired by a deep connection to the nursing profession and family history – will help prepare future healthcare professionals while addressing critical workforce shortages in the region.
A west Georgia native, Chesnut’s ties to UWG extend far beyond her generosity. She has long recognized UWG’s importance in enriching the community and supporting its growth.
“Although I may not be a UWG graduate, we have all prospered from UWG’s long and historic presence in this area,” Chesnut shared. “My children and grandchildren have attended UWG at various times, and our exceptional healthcare systems in both Carroll and Coweta counties would not be possible without UWG.”
For Chesnut, the decision to support nursing students is personal, rooted in the memory of her mother, Pansy Tisinger Brown.
“My mother was Southwire’s first nurse, and she worked at Tanner Medical Center,” she explained. “Her stories and love of nursing helped to inspire one of my grandsons to earn his nursing degree at UWG.”
Chesnut emphasized the importance of investing in nursing education to address regional needs.
“By supporting these students, we are able to help mitigate nursing shortages in our region, enhancing the quality of life in the most important dimension,” she said.
Chesnut’s gift not only honors her mother’s legacy but also reflects her belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities. By investing in UWG’s nursing students, she is helping secure a brighter future for healthcare in Carroll and Coweta counties and beyond.
“We are deeply grateful for the generosity of people like Gwyn Chesnut, whose support helps us prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals,” said Allyson Bretch, CEO of UWG’s philanthropic foundations and vice president for university advancement. “This commitment ensures that UWG will continue addressing critical workforce needs in our region and beyond, especially in fields as vital as healthcare.”
