Last week, the University of West Georgia’s University College, in partnership with the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC), celebrated the second cohort of its groundbreaking police academy, the Academic Law Enforcement Training Exchange (ALETE).  

The ceremony, held at Townsend Center for the Performing Arts, honored the achievements of 15 graduates who completed the program. The 12-week intensive training included a full curriculum of physical training, classroom instruction, simulations, practice exercises, law exams and Emergency Vehicles Operator’s Course and firearms training.  

“We are thrilled to celebrate your remarkable commitment to service in a high-demand, high-impact field like law enforcement,” said Dr. Brendan Kelly, UWG’s president, during the ceremony. “The rigorous training and dedication you have demonstrated throughout this program is commendable, and as you step into your new roles, you carry with you the skills, knowledge and resilience to make a profound impact in the communities to which we are in service.” 

Members of the second ALETE class included UWG students and cadets from the Carrollton Police Department, UWG’s Police Department, Carroll County Fire Marshall, Carrollton Fire Department and Hiram Police Department. Upon completion, graduates are deemed Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified officers, which is the basic qualification for anyone seeking to work in the field. 

ALETE 2024 Class President, Isaac Epps, who served with the United States Marine Corps upon his high school graduation, noted the responsibilities he and his fellow classmates now carry.  

“Our cohort has built a family, supporting each other through every challenge,” Epps said. “Instead of succumbing to pressure, we celebrated our successes together. This moment is not the finish line but the beginning of a lifelong journey. Our goal is to continue growing throughout our careers and to always be worthy of the trust placed in us.” 

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr delivered the keynote address during the ceremony, emphasizing the significance of the graduates’ commitment to public service and the vital role they will play in their communities. 

“We need dedicated individuals like you to step up and serve,” explained Carr. “You have been called to an important mission that plays a crucial role in our communities. Our state stands proudly behind you, offering support and gratitude for your dedication. The road ahead may not be easy, but your presence is essential. Today, we celebrate this significant milestone with you and the impact you will make.”
