The University of West Georgia Culture Lab is bringing world-class blues back to Carrollton, blending creativity, education and community impact with its next event in the “Miked Up” series.

Mike Mattison

“Miked Up Vol II: Mattison on the Blues” will feature two-time Grammy Award-winning artist Mike Mattison, member of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, at the Carrollton Center for the Arts on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event will benefit scholarships for UWG students, ensuring the university’s continued investment in cultivating the next generation of talent.

“Mattison is a Harvard graduate and co-author of a book about the blues,” said Dr. Chad Davidson, UWG’s executive director of global engagements and cultural programming. “It's rare to find a musician of his caliber who also can clearly articulate, historicize and indeed educate. Plus, he has a gigantic heart and cares deeply about education.”

The event promises to deliver a unique blend of performance and insight, with Mattison offering a masterclass experience that dives into the evolution of blues music and its cultural impact.

“What makes this event special is Mattison’s ability to balance a live concert experience with educational commentary,” Davidson explained. “He’ll share insights on the songs he performs, why he chose them and their significance in the history of the blues genre.”

Tickets are $20 for the main event. The VIP afterparty, already sold out, was made possible through generous contributions from community partners like Milestone Investment Management and Howard Seeman.

“Michael and Andrea Stone volunteered to cover the rental cost of the Carrollton Center for the Arts, ticket administrative fees and wine for the reception, while Howard Seeman covered the catering costs,” Davidson shared. “They approached us, wanting to ensure the event took place and that all ticket proceeds went directly to UWG student scholarships.”

UWG Culture Lab represents the university’s commitment to fostering creativity and enhancing the cultural landscape of both the campus and surrounding communities.

“The University of West Georgia is a crossroads of ideas, research and artistic expression,” Davidson said. “The Culture Lab ensures that the university also serves the surrounding communities by offering exciting cultural opportunities and creating funding possibilities to help our students thrive.”
