Hosting academic-related events is a great way for students across the University of West Georgia to showcase their talent, receive advice on experiential learning and be able to be more involved in what they love most. One of the major events that recently took place was Innovation Day, a special event organized by the Richards College of Business’ management information systems coordinator Samuel Wolde.
“The purpose of Innovation Day is to bring together students from various colleges and disciplines across the university, providing them with an opportunity to showcase their creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills,” Wolde explained. “What makes this event even more special is that it is open to all students, undergraduate and graduate, regardless of their major.”
Taking part in Innovation Day served as an excellent opportunity for students to increase their expertise in teamwork, networking and communication. All these aspects worked well in the collaborative nature that was in store for students, as these were needed to increase engagement.

The biggest takeaway from the event was that students were put into teams to create an app that held true meaning in today’s society.
“Working in teams and presenting their ideas helped students build essential skills – such as communication, problem solving and project management,” Wolde said. “These real-world skills are not only important during their time at university but will also serve them well after graduation.”
The winners of the Innovation Day were Aleksandra Dolgikh, Emily Fiscus and Joshua Whitman. Their app, “Check It,” focused on helping users fact-check their online content. Fiscus, a senior majoring in finance, decided to take part in Innovation Day as a way to learn more about using technology for business development.
“We didn’t know each other before, but everyone had something to bring to the table,” Fiscus explained. “We had a computer science major who was able to do the coding, a marketing major who created an amazing logo and design of our company, and a finance major who was able to find the facts and explain how it works.”

This isn’t the first time that Fiscus participated in a school event. In fact, she’s one the main student voices for the university. In addition to being a finance major, she is also a social media ambassador for the university, as she uses her platform to display the best of UWG.
“Say yes to every opportunity and go to every free event the school has,” Fiscus said. “You never know what may come of it and what you could learn.”
Wolde also encouraged students to experience opportunities that are vastly different from their chosen profession.
“The university invests significant time and resources to provide these opportunities,” he concluded. “I highly encourage students to participate and make the most out of them.”
