What Scholarships Are Available and How do I Apply?

These sections contain details about the scholarships available to College of Education undergraduate and graduate students. The following is a tentative list of all scholarships available from the College of Education. They are broken down into three areas: graduate, undergraduate, and scholarships available to both.

 The 2023-2024 UWG Scholarship Application is open for students to complete. This Scholarship Application is for Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Summer 2024 semesters.

The 2022-2023 UWG Scholarship Application will remain open for students to complete until May 30, 2023. This Scholarship Application is for Fall 2022, Spring 2023, and Summer 2023 semesters.

Douvanis (Dr. Gus) Memorial Award

Awarded to graduate student with strong academic standing in the Department of Leadership, Research, and School Improvement. Preference given to those demonstrating financial need.

Linton Deck Leadership Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a graduate student majoring in Educational Leadership. Preference to candidates who work in schools with at-risk populations and for students demonstrating financial need. 

Edwin M. Blue Scholarship

Awarded to a student in Educational Leadership on the basis of scholarship and professional promise. The scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Dr. Edwin M. Blue, who served Georgia for more than 40 years as public school and college teacher and administrator.

Thomas S. Upchurch Educational Leadership Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student in Educational Leadership based on merit and financial need.  The award is intended to help establish future leaders in education.

The scholarship was established by family of Thomas S. Upchurch.

Leona Ingram Scholarship

Awarded to a certified educator pursuing a Master's or Doctoral degree in education. Demonstrated financial need.

The scholarship was established by Leona Ingram, sister of Irvine Sullivan Ingram. She was a career educator beginning with the Crawford County School System and later joining the Atlanta School System.

Pearl Nix Scholarship

Awarded to a student pursuing a Master's degree in the field of education.

The scholarship was endowed by Dr. Pearl Nix, retired Professor of Education, who served as a department head and as the Director of Psychological Services.

Bernice Freeman Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student who is working towards a Master's degree in Education in Reading. Demonstrated financial need.

The scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Bernice Freeman, who served as Professor of Education and head of the Department of Secondary Education at West Georgia.

Louis Herzog Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student majoring in Special Education with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Financial need will be considered. Preference given to a Carroll County High School graduate who has demonstrated leadership qualities.

The scholarship was established to honor Louis Herzog for his 32 years of service to Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens.

Dr. Peggy S. Steelmon Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student seeking a degree in collaborative support and intervention program in Reading with exceptional academic standing.  Demonstrated leadership abilities and qualities to become outstanding educator. Preference given to financial need. 

The scholarship was established by family and friends of Peggy S. Steelmon.

Priscilla Bennett Family Scholarship

Awarded to a part-time or full-time students in School Media Certification (Masters or Add-on). Awarded after the completion of one term. Preference for female students. 

The scholarship was established to honor Dr. Priscilla Bennett, a Professor in the Department of Research, Media, and Technology; her son, Robert Bennett; and her mother, Alice Barnes. The Media Department selects the recipient.

Annie Belle Weaver Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student pursuing a Media degree.

The scholarship fund was endowed by a bequest from the estate of Miss Annie Belle Weaver, West Georgia's first librarian.

Dr. John J. and Ann K. Pershing Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology.

The scholarship honors Dr. John Pershing, former Professor and Head of the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology.

David Davis Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to UWG graduate student working towards a Master’s Degree in Education. Financial need may be considered.

The scholarship was established by Dr. Judy Butler in memory of her brother, David Davis.

Dr. Dano M. Faires Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student majoring in Early Childhood Education (Pre-K - 5), has a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrated financial need.

Gibson/Overton/Peete Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student pursing a degree in Business Education with a minimum GPA of 3.0.

CHREA 20th Century Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a rising junior accepted in the Teacher Education Program within the UWG College of Education, be a graduate of a public high school within Heard or Carroll counties, and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.  Additionally, two professors (education or major area) must provide a recommendation. Financial need must also be considered.  

The scholarship was established by the Carroll County Retired Educators Association.

Earline J. Powers Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a senior who is majoring in Education and completing the internship phase of the program. Preference given to students from one of the following counties: Carroll, Fulton, DeKalb, Fayette, or Stephens.

Lewis L. & Floy Burson Combs Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to student majoring in Education. Preference should be given to a student who attended high school in Heard County or Carroll County, GA.

Jill Bryson Legacy Scholarship

Awarded to a Freshman student by admissions. Awarded by the Admissions Office.

Bill Cummings Scholarship Fund

Awarded to an undergraduate student in the College of Education that is “most deserving.” The Bill Cummings Scholarship was established in 2010 by Mr. Bill Cummings to recognize and reward outstanding College of Education students.  This Endowment will serve as a lasting tribute to the life and work of Bill Cummings.

Jay Chapman Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to two students, one male and one female.  Candidates must be undergraduate students majoring in Education, who have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference given to students who participate in intramural sports.

The Jay Chapman Memorial Scholarship was established in 2012 by the Chapman family and friends to support students who are majoring in Education.

Judy Kerr Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a female student majoring in Early Childhood Education. Minimum GPA of 2.0 required. Preference given to Parkway Baptist Church members.

The scholarship was established by Parkway Baptist Church in memory of Julia Ann (Judy) Kerr. She received a masters and a specialist in Education degree from West Georgia College. She was an elementary teacher in Cobb County for seventeen years.

Dot McNabb Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior Physical Education major, who demonstrates merit and leadership potential, with a minimum GPA of 2.8. Financial need is a secondary consideration. 

Colleagues, friends and former students of Dorothy "Dot" McNabb established this scholarship in honor of her 35-year career as a teacher and coach at West Georgia. "Miss Mac" was largely responsible for the development of the women's athletic program.

Dr. Robert M. Reeves Scholarship

Awarded to a rising senior majoring in Physical Education, Health & Community Wellness, or Sport Management, with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  The student should be a member of a professional organization related to the student's major and display qualities such as: leadership, cooperation, enthusiasm, and dependability. Financial need may also e considered.

The scholarship was established by Dr. Reeves following his retirement from West Georgia's Department of Physical Education and Recreation.

Samuel Teague Ray, Sr. Public Health Endowment

Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Health & Community Wellness, have a minimum GPA of 2.65, and demonstrate financial need. Additionally, they must be active in their community or volunteer. 

Mary White Davidson Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior, who shows promise of becoming an excellent middle grades teacher.

The scholarship was established by students and friends of Mrs. Davidson.

Herbert S. and Pauline T. Hatton Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior majoring in Special Education and preference for financial need.

The scholarship was established by their son, Herbert W. Hatton, to symbolize the Hattons' concern and compassion for mentally and physically challenged children.

Fred F. Hallum Scholarship

Awarded to a UWG athlete, with preference given to Physical Education majors, chosen by a committee appointed by the Chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Recreation.

The scholarship was established by Rosemary N. Hallum.

George Colyer Scholarship

Awarded to junior or senior majoring in Special Education, with a minimum GPA of 2.75.  Exemplifies outstanding ability to work with exceptional children. 

The scholarship honors a former member of West Georgia's Special Education faculty.

Wilda Seagraves Jackson

Awarded to a senior majoring in education in recognition of scholastic achievement. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.2.

The scholarship was established by family and friends of Wilda Seagraves Jackson.

Effie McGuire Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to a rising junior majoring in Elementary Education with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrating financial need. Preference given to graduate of a Carroll County high school. Renewable for senior year.

The scholarship was established to honor the memory of Effie McGuire, beloved teacher at the Oak Mountain schoolhouse for more than ten years.

Edna Becker Hallum Scholarship

Awarded to a student majoring in Education and chosen by a committee appointed by the Dean of the College of Education.

The scholarship was established by Rosemary N. Hallum.

Margaret N. Perkins, Pilots Club of Carrollton Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Special Education or Speech Pathology. Students will submit an essay of at least 500 words describing how the student's course of study or future goals relate to brain related disorders.

Johnnie and Edna Huey Scholarship

Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate OR graduate student with a 3.0 GPA or higher, preference for graduate students. Student must be from Bowdon, GA or Ranburn, AL. Priority for students demonstrating financial need. Renewable as long as criteria continues to be met. 

The scholarship was endowed by Johnnie B. and Edna P. Huey.

Miss Michele May & Dr. Nancy Pollard Scholarship

Awarded to a student majoring in Special Education (junior, senior, and graduate student) with demonstrated financial need. 

Must be one of the following:

  1. Being a parent of an individual with a disability
  2. Being a UWG student with a documented disability
  3. Being a previous paraprofessional in Special Education

Carrollton Civitan Scholarship

Awarded to undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Special Education. Selection criteria include academic achievement and involvement in the field of Special Education.

The scholarship was established by the Carrollton Civitan Club.

Moselle T. Chappell Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Special Education who is in good academic standing, demonstrates financial need, and exhibits leadership qualities.

The scholarship was endowed by the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens in memory of Moselle Chappell, the first special education teacher in Carroll County, and a founding member of the Carroll County Association for Retarded Citizens.

Pilot Club of Carrollton Scholarship

Awarded to a full time undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Special Education or Speech Language Pathology.

The scholarship was established in honor of past or current Pilot Club members.

CHREA 21st Century Award

Awarded to a non-traditional undergraduate (25 years or older) or graduate student (any age) majoring in Education. Recipient should currently reside in Carroll or Heard County. Award based equally on merit and financial need.

This fund was established by the Carroll Heard Retired Educator's Association to be awarded annually based on merit and financial need.

William D. Conner Scholarship

Awarded to a graduate student with financial need majoring in Secondary Education Mathematics.  Academic achievement will be the secondary consideration.  Preference will be given to a minority graduate student meeting the scholarship criteria. If a minority graduate student does not meet the criteria, it will be given to an undergraduate student majoring in Mathematics Education. Scholarship is renewable for up to 6 years, if criteria continues to be met. 

The scholarship was established by William D. Conner.

Douglas and Wilma Kidd Thornton Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a student who graduated from a high school in Georgia.

Debbie Forrester Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a UWG senior or graduate student with an education major, who is resident of Gwinnet County, GA. Student should have a 2.5 GPA or higher and demonstrate financial need. Candidate should be involved in the West Georgia Baptist Student Union.

Dr. Thomas W. Sills Scholarship

Awarded to an outstanding Early Childhood Education major.

The Carole Zuker Carreker Early Childhood Education Scholarship

Awarded to a student who meets the following criteria:

  1. Early Childhood Education major
  2. Demonstrated financial need
  3. In good academic standing as determined by the College of Education
  4. Preference for students with a music background and interest in using music in teaching.

Hugh L. Brock, Jr. and Doris Hollingsworth Brock Scholarship for Education Fund

Awarded to a student majoring in Early Childhood Education with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrates strong character.  Preference for students with unmet financial need and for a graduate from a Carroll county or city high school. Possibility of renewal.  If no qualified Early Childhood Education majors, Science Education will be considered. 

Joe H. McGiboney Scholarship

Awarded to a student pursuing a degree in a Secondary Education program.

The scholarship honors the man who was instrumental in establishing the close working relationship between West Georgia's teacher education program and the Carroll County Schools. A Carroll County native, Mr. McGiboney served as teacher, principal, and superintendent of Carroll County Schools from 1915 through 1952.

Angela Lumpkin Endowed Scholarship

Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Education and demonstrates financial need; preference for students with a minimum 3.0 GPA. 

Hugh McTeer Memorial Scholarship Fund

Awarded to a College of Education student.  Committee will consider demonstrated academic ability and promise, as well as financial need. 

Dr. McTeer was a longtime member of Education faculty at West Georgia and is remembered as a master teacher.

Sadie M. Hughes Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a deserving student majoring in Education.

The scholarship was established by Mr. C. Eugene Hughes in honor of his wife, a member of the first graduating class at West Georgia.

Dr. Prentice L. Gott Family Scholarship

Awarded to a student majoring in Secondary Education, demonstrating financial need.

Dr. Gott was an administrator and faculty member in secondary education from 1964-1983, and was named Outstanding Retired Professor in 1998.
